About

Welcome to Wise Therapy: Counseling and Mindfulness Services!

Are you seeking a path to inner peace and healing? At Wise Therapy, we transcend traditional approaches by integrating evidence-based care with mindfulness practices, guiding you towards holistic well-being. I'm Marc Colbeck, a Registered Counsellor, Buddhist Chaplain, retired Paramedic, and former Senior Lecturer in Paramedicine. With extensive experience as a published researcher, I'm dedicated to supporting you on your journey with compassion and expertise. I have a Masters degree in Counselling Psychology and have been practicing Zen Buddhism since 1986, including spending two years as a resident student in a Zen Centre.  I am also a founding member of of the Australian Association for Buddhist Chaplains and currently am a member of  the Board of Directors.

Unlike the more intellectually based methods of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, my approach dives deeper, embracing mindfulness and compassion as integral parts of healing. Together, we'll explore your inner landscape, nurturing self-awareness and resilience. If you've tried traditional therapy and were left wondering, "How do I use this insight to actually change my life?" my approach can help integrate these insights and transform them into meaningful changes in mind states and behaviour.

I work with anyone interested in mindfully learning to regulate their thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. As a practitioner trained in the Hakomi method of counselling, I utilize a mindful, somatic-based therapy approach to help you connect with your body and uncover deep-seated patterns that influence your life.

I work with people experiencing internal distress of any sort. This includes emergency services personnel, spiritual practitioners, those interested in yoga and other paths of psycho-spiritual growth, as well as those affected by spiritual abuse and religious trauma. I also help men who are navigating complex aspects of their sexuality and am warmly welcoming of LGBTQI+ individuals. I have assisted people who have been in traditional therapy and found it lacking. I offer a safe and non-judgmental space for exploration and healing, no matter what your background or specific challenges might be.

Conversely, many on a spiritual path sometimes experience very positive insights and awakenings that might be difficult to integrate into our understanding of the world and our daily lives.  With almost 40 years of intense meditative practice I can assist those having spiritual breakthroughs that might sometimes be perceived as intense or confusing.

At Wise Therapy, I believe in the power of mindfulness and compassion to transform lives and cultivate deep connections with oneself and others. With warmth and openess, I invite you to take the first step towards a more balanced and fulfilling life.
